PROF. ALI AHMAD COMMEMORATES JUNE 12, URGES LEADERS TO UPHOLD DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES AND SERVE WITH HONOUR
Former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly and constitutional law scholar, Prof. Ali Ahmad, has joined fellow Nigerians in commemorating June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, calling for deep reflection on the nation’s democratic journey and the sacrifices that shaped it.
Prof. Ahmad described June 12 as a historic milestone that celebrates the triumph of the people’s will, symbolized by the annulled 1993 elections and the legacy of Chief M.K.O. Abiola. He noted that the significance of the date lies in its enduring call for justice, inclusion, and respect for the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders.
As we commemorate this day, let us remember that democracy is not built by elections alone, but through consistent adherence to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, he said. June 12 reminds us that leadership is a sacred trust—one that must reflect the hopes of the governed.
Speaking to the people of Kwara and Nigerians at large, Prof. Ahmad urged all leaders to recommit to the core democratic values of service, truth, and fairness. He emphasized the need to strengthen democratic institutions, encourage citizen participation, and protect fundamental freedoms.
Our democracy must rise to serve the marginalized, promote unity across ethnic and religious divides, and address the real concerns of the people, he added.
Prof. Ahmad warned against political exclusion, voter apathy, and shrinking civic spaces, saying these are contrary to the spirit of June 12. He called on governments to embrace civic engagement and prioritize people-centered policies.
To those in leadership, this day is a reminder that humility, honesty, and accountability are the pillars of lasting governance, he said.
He also paid tribute to pro-democracy advocates, civil society organizations, and young Nigerians who continue to push for reforms and defend democratic values.
Let us never forget the cost of silence or the price paid by those who stood for freedom, he concluded.
Prof. Ahmad called on all citizens to remain hopeful, engaged, and committed to building a better Nigeria.
May June 12 continue to inspire us to protect democracy and work towards a more just and united nation.
