Passing the Sage of Our Time: Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi – A Tribute from Prof. Ali Ahmad

The Muslim Ummah has lost not just a scholar, but a sage of rare spiritual depth whose life embodied submission, devotion, and the inner realities of faith. The passing of Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi marks the close of a luminous chapter in the spiritual history of our time. His presence was a bridge between knowledge and experience, between sacred learning and divine consciousness, and his influence will remain alive in hearts long after his departure,” remarked Prof. Ali Ahmad, former Speaker of the 8th Kwara State House of Assembly and Professor of Constitutional Law.

Prof. Ahmad further reflected on the unique spiritual path of the late Sheikh. “He was a living representation of the true Sufi tradition — a path not of empty ritual, but of inner awakening and purification of the soul. In an era consumed by material distraction and shallow knowledge, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi carried forward the light of the great spiritual masters of Islam, reminding us that true knowledge is not only studied but tasted, lived, and reflected in character. His quiet strength, humility, and unwavering discipline in the path of Allah served as a model for all who encountered him, directly or through his teachings.”

He noted that one of the most extraordinary aspects of Sheikh Bauchi’s legacy was his impact within his own household and lineage. “That seventy-seven of his children became huffaz of the Holy Qur’an is not only a rare distinction, but an unmatched demonstration of a life completely surrendered to the service of Allah’s Book. Through him, and through the generations of scholars, students, and memorizers he raised and inspired, Nigeria has emerged as one of the leading nations in Qur’anic memorisation in our time — a spiritual inheritance of immeasurable value.”

Recalling a personal encounter, Prof. Ahmad added, “Years ago, I was honoured to sit among the crowd in some of his Ramadan Tafsir gatherings, sessions he faithfully held for more than seventy years. The atmosphere was unlike any other — a mosque filled beyond capacity, hearts gathered in reverence, and his calm yet powerful voice unveiling the meanings of the Qur’an in a manner that touched both intellect and soul. That experience remains etched in my heart and continues to guide me whenever I reflect upon it.”

Concluding his tribute, Prof. Ahmad offered prayers for the late scholar and comfort for those he left behind. “May Allah, the Most Merciful, forgive his shortcomings, elevate his rank among the righteous, and admit him into the highest gardens of Al-Jannatul Firdaus. May He grant his family, his students, his followers, and the entire Ummah beautiful patience, deep solace, and unshakable strength in this moment of profound loss. Indeed, to Allah we belong, and to Him we shall surely return.”

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji‘un.
