Fresh Attacks in Kwara: Insecurity and Government’s Failure to Uphold Its Oath of Office

Prof. Ali Ahmad, former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly and Professor of Constitutional Law, has condemned in strong terms the recent twin attacks in Motokun village (Patigi LGA) and Fanagun village (Tsaragi Emirate) — assaults that left a pregnant woman dead, many abducted, and dozens of cattle stolen.

In his statement, Prof. Ahmad lamented the insensitivity of the government under which Kwarans continue to suffer unprovoked killings, abductions, and destruction of livelihoods, stressing that the oath of office taken on May 29, 2019, to protect lives and property has been reduced to a mere ritual.

“Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) is clear: ‘the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.’ Yet today we see daily bloodshed in Motokun, simultaneous raids in Fanagun, families living in fear — while the government still treats criticism of its failure as an embarrassment. We shall never GET TIRED of drawing attention to the daily loss of innocent lives until normalcy is restored,” Prof. Ahmad declared.

He further noted that the government’s frequent claim of “doing its best” cannot be acknowledged until it produces tangible results. “The test of leadership is not effort but impact. As long as lives are wasted, families displaced, and terror thrives unchecked, then that best is not good enough. The loss of one preventable life is already a tragedy too many,” he added.

Prof. Ahmad urged the government to rise to its constitutional and moral responsibilities, reminding it that governance is not about ceremonies and photo opportunities but about securing lives, protecting property, and ensuring citizens live without fear.

Finally, he called on citizens to remain calm but vigilant, to support one another in these trying times, and to continue demanding accountability and decisive action from those in power.
