Rejection of Federal Intervention on Hospital Renovation: Kwara Loses N200 Million — Prof. Ali Ahmad
Prof. Ali Ahmad has expressed grave concern over the rejection of a N200 million hospital renovation project funded by the Federal Government, describing the development as a regrettable loss rooted in political bias and misplaced priorities.
The project, earmarked for a hospital within a local government jurisdiction in Kwara State, was reportedly declined by the local government leadership. According to Prof. Ahmad, the council chairman justified the decision by citing the facilitator’s perceived disloyalty to the state’s Governor—an explanation the former Speaker described as emblematic of a dangerous governance culture where personal loyalty outweighs public good.
He noted that, even if the state claims to have a financial surplus, refusing a cost-free federal intervention intended to enhance public healthcare is not only fiscally irresponsible but morally indefensible. This goes beyond a missed development opportunity, Prof. Ahmad said. It amounts to deliberate sabotage of public welfare—simply to protect narrow political interests.
Prof. Ahmad emphasized that such federally supported projects are designed to complement state and local efforts by easing budgetary pressures and accelerating access to basic services. Turning down a N200 million project is not merely rejecting development; it is denying citizens improved healthcare, job opportunities, and economic relief—without just cause.
He concluded with a call for leadership that puts people first. “The rejection of this project sends a troubling signal—that in Kwara today, allegiance to individuals is placed above service to the people. This must not be the standard. Our people deserve leadership guided by principle, not politics.”
